Labor Community News & Events: 4/21/16

Good afternoon!

Last weekend the Labor Council held its annual Awards in Excellence Dinner honoring Labor Leader Lisa Fair (ATU #1309) and Union of the Year Teamsters #542 (Secretary-Treasurer Jaime Vasquez) and a number others who work hard every day to strengthen our labor movement. Stay tuned for a full rundown of the event (including pictures!) in our next update.

In the meantime, let’s talk about elections. We are just six weeks away from the June 7 vote on Prop I and several of our Labor Council endorsed candidate races. If you haven’t already signed up to walk a neighborhood or volunteer at a phone bank - NOW is the time. Here are three easy ways you get involved this weekend:

Kaiser Permanente SCAL PSP Payout

Coalition Union Brothers and Sisters,

Congratulations! We showed what Coalition Union solidarity looks like.

Because we raised our voices—50,000-strong in the Southern California region—each full-time Coalition union-represented employee will receive upwards of $900 in our settlement of the 2015 payout for the Performance Sharing Program (PSP).

This is a much better solution than the employer’s original offer of a “special payment” of $215 dollars per employee in lieu of the payout for the PSP—which we bargained in the National Agreement to recognize and reward the hard work that our frontline puts into KP’s growth and reputation for excellent care and service.

Local 30 Scholarships – And the winners are

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2015 OPEIU Local 30 Scholarship Fund Awards.  Each award is in the amount of $1,500.00.

Toy Drive – Giving feels good, and does good too

On behalf of the Staff, Officers and Executive Board of Local 30, we would like to thank you for your participation and generosity.  The Toy Drive was a huge success!  Many union families in need will benefit from this great event.  Thank you!

President Obama Praises Labor Management Partnership

President Obama Praises Labor Management Partnership
Kaiser Permanente is “considered one of the premier health organizations in the country,” according to President Barack Obama, because it’s a place where union workers have a voice to improve quality and service. Check out this video excerpt from the Oct. 7, 2015, workers’ voice summit at the White House to hear Obama’s praise for KP and the Labor Management Partnership.

Don’t Sign It! Fair Pay For Hard Work!

Today, the San Diego City Council overrode Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s veto and OFFICIALLY PASSED THE EARNED SICK DAYS AND MINIMUM WAGE ORDINANCE! Their override means that the Earned Sick Leave-Minimum Wage is once again in place to help hardworking San Diegans who struggle to pay the rent and buy groceries.

However, our fight continues, opponents representing a small handful of special interests have announced that they are prepared to spend what it takes to repeal the law. They will be in front of grocery stores and other areas in the city attempting to collect 34,000 signatures to repeal the law.

To push back against this brazen attack against hard working San Diegans we need your help! Council President Todd Gloria, Irwin Jacobs, Mel Katz, Bill Walton and Barbara Bry kicked off the citywide campaign, simply called “Don’t Sign It,” to defeat the referendum against the ordinance.

Today, City Council stood up for 280,000 San Diegans who lack sick leave and nearly 200,000 low-wage workers who work hard every day and can’t afford rent and groceries, now its time to do our part.

Here's what you can do
:

  1. Take the pledge not to sign the anti-sick days anti-minimum wage petitions.
  2. Inform as many people as possible that the earned sick days and minimum wage policy HAS PASSED, and that any signature gathering effort is an attempt to TAKE IT AWAY!! Tell your friends: DON’T SIGN IT!
  3. If you see a signature gatherer, call or text the following hotline: (619) 930 – 3300.
  4. Volunteer.
