Kaiser Permanente Refuses to Join Nearly 200 of Nation’s Largest Corporations in Pledge to Put Community Needs Before Profits

Healthcare Giant One of Only A Handful of Business Roundtable Members Refusing to Sign Landmark Statement

LOS ANGELES – In a move that’s raising eyebrows from workers and patients across the country, healthcare giant Kaiser Permanente is one of only a handful of the nation’s nearly 200- largest corporations that refused to sign an Aug. 19 “Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation,” calling on companies to shift from making shareholders their main focus to including all of their stakeholders, including employees and the community.

In a Politico article, Kaiser Permanente said it didn’t sign the Business Roundtable pledge because it is a non-profit and doesn’t have shareholders, even though the statement focuses on broadening to all stakeholders. Two corporations without shareholders – Guardian Life and New York Life – did sign the statement.

National Bargaining Update 8/05/19

Local 30 Members,
Recently you have seen a number of messages from management in Southern California saying they have made offers to settle our contract dispute. They mention three percent wage increases and a four-year contract, only minor increases to your healthcare co-pays, and even continuation of the PSP bonus and some other smaller things, things that we already have. 

While there is some truth to these claims it is more about what they are not saying that should concern us. These things come at a cost and the Coalition Unions are not willing to pay that cost.

We have been clear with Kaiser that we need to rebuild our Partnership and that starts with treating each other fairly and honestly. In a partnership of any kind the parties must be equals. Our Coalition has since the start of these negotiations been very clear that wage increases must be fair to all Coalition Union members. The wages in some of the Regions Outside California (the so-called ROC’s) are already lower than those in California and to continue to have them receive lower increases than us only sets them further behind and makes a bad situation worse.

Don’t Sign It! Fair Pay For Hard Work!

Today, the San Diego City Council overrode Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s veto and OFFICIALLY PASSED THE EARNED SICK DAYS AND MINIMUM WAGE ORDINANCE! Their override means that the Earned Sick Leave-Minimum Wage is once again in place to help hardworking San Diegans who struggle to pay the rent and buy groceries.

However, our fight continues, opponents representing a small handful of special interests have announced that they are prepared to spend what it takes to repeal the law. They will be in front of grocery stores and other areas in the city attempting to collect 34,000 signatures to repeal the law.

To push back against this brazen attack against hard working San Diegans we need your help! Council President Todd Gloria, Irwin Jacobs, Mel Katz, Bill Walton and Barbara Bry kicked off the citywide campaign, simply called “Don’t Sign It,” to defeat the referendum against the ordinance.

Today, City Council stood up for 280,000 San Diegans who lack sick leave and nearly 200,000 low-wage workers who work hard every day and can’t afford rent and groceries, now its time to do our part. 

Here's what you can do:

  1. Take the pledge not to sign the anti-sick days anti-minimum wage petitions.
  2. Inform as many people as possible that the earned sick days and minimum wage policy HAS PASSED, and that any signature gathering effort is an attempt to TAKE IT AWAY!! Tell your friends: DON’T SIGN IT!
  3. If you see a signature gatherer, call or text the following hotline: (619) 930 – 3300.
  4. Volunteer.
