National Bargaining Update 8/05/19

Local 30 Members,
Recently you have seen a number of messages from management in Southern California saying they have made offers to settle our contract dispute. They mention three percent wage increases and a four-year contract, only minor increases to your healthcare co-pays, and even continuation of the PSP bonus and some other smaller things, things that we already have.

While there is some truth to these claims it is more about what they are not saying that should concern us. These things come at a cost and the Coalition Unions are not willing to pay that cost.

We have been clear with Kaiser that we need to rebuild our Partnership and that starts with treating each other fairly and honestly. In a partnership of any kind the parties must be equals. Our Coalition has since the start of these negotiations been very clear that wage increases must be fair to all Coalition Union members. The wages in some of the Regions Outside California (the so-called ROC’s) are already lower than those in California and to continue to have them receive lower increases than us only sets them further behind and makes a bad situation worse.

To All OPEIU Local Unions, Guilds and Directly Affiliated Groups:

Union Plus, which offers Capitol One credit card options to union members – including OPEIU members – has relayed information to us about the Capitol One data security incident. According to Capitol One’s overview site, no credit card account numbers or log-on credentials were stolen. The data breached was credit card application data. Union Plus recommends the resources below for information about the breach and its impact on customers.

Impacted Union Plus cardholders will receive information directly from Capital One. Customers also are encouraged to call the customer service number on the back of their Union Plus card if they need any additional assistance. We will keep you posted as we learn new information from Union Plus.\

Tell Kaiser to Stop Committing Unfair Labor Practices!

Corporate healthcare is making America sick, and Kaiser is becoming the prime example: Stockpiling massive profits, enriching top execs instead of serving communities and bargaining in good faith with front-line caregivers who make it successful.

COALITION PRESS RELEASE ON NATIONAL BARGAINING

OAKLAND, Calif. - Leading Democratic presidential candidates are lining up behind 85,000 employees at Kaiser Permanente who are preparing to launch the country’s largest strike in more than two decades.

U.S. Sens. Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke recently tweeted support for Kaiser workers, who will begin voting in late July to authorize an unfair labor practice strike beginning in October 2019. It would be the nation’s largest walkout since UPS workers went on strike in 1997.

85,000 Kaiser Workers Prepare for the Largest U.S. Strike in More Than Two Decades as Contract Talks Stall

LOS ANGELES – More than 85,000 Kaiser Permanente workers are making preparations for a national strike to begin this fall as contract talks between the workers and the giant, non-profit healthcare corporation broke off Thursday without an agreement.

The workers are from multiple unions in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, Hawaii and the District of Columbia. Beginning in late July and continuing into August, union members will be voting to authorize their bargaining team to call the unfair labor practice strike. It would be the largest strike in the U.S. since the 1997 Teamsters strike at UPS.
